UPSC CDS 2018: Apply for 414 Posts across all Security Forces

UPSC CDS Recruitment Exam 2018 is a national level entrance examination conducted twice a
year, in February and November to recruit potential candidates. This exam is majorly to screen
and select eligible candidates for admission to Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval
Academy (INA), Officers Training Academy (OTA) and Air Force Academy (AFA). After
selection, candidates are allotted as Commissioned officers in the Army, Navy, Air Force and
Officers Training Academy. There are 414 Central government vacancies for grabs through
CDS 2018 recruitment process.
The actual recruitment through UPSC CDS exam is a two stage process; written exam, followed
by intelligence and personality tests by the Services Selection Board (SSB). Only those who
qualify the written test (offline mode) will go for SSB tests. By the way, the application process
for UPSC CDS I, began already from November 8 and the last date for registration got over on
December 4, 2017.
The written exam will take place on February 4, 2018 and November 18, 2018 for UPSC CDS
(I) and CDS (II), respectively. Following this, one can expect their results by March, 2018 and
December, 2018.
SBB tests are conducted after the declaration of result for written exam. Final selection takes
place after this. SSB test check the intelligence, personality, compatibility and potential of
candidates before their final selection. These tests usually go on for five days and are conducted
in multiple stages. Wow, one requires grit and determination to pass this stage!
The merit list is then prepared based on order of marks secured in written exam and SSB tests.
Final selection succeeds as last step, based on candidate’s place in the merit list, personal choice
and meeting the medical fitness criteria.

UPSC CDS 2018 Eligibility and Number of Posts (Category-wise)

To be eligible for UPSC CDS, one should either be a citizen of India or subject of Bhutan or
Nepal. Being a Tibetan refugee who came to India before the 1st January, 1962 to permanently
settle in India, or a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka
and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania,
Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam to permanently settle in India, can also apply for
this exam.
Let’s check the in-depth eligibility criteria of the five categories of UPSC Combined Defense
Service exams and also the number of vacant posts in each category. So, dive in.

1) Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun

To appear for this category under Combined Defense Services, one should be born not earlier
than 2nd January, 1995 and not later than 1st January, 2000. Any graduation degree or any other
equivalent from any recognized university, is also mandatory. And this is strictly for unmarried

Now, the course at IMA will start from January 2019, for their 100 vacancy posts.

2) Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala

Under the Indian Naval Academy category, only unmarried male candidates can apply. One
should be born not earlier than 2nd January, 1995 and not later than 1st January, 2000, so as to
apply. Having any degree in Engineering from any recognized University or educational
institution, is also essential.
This Academy has 45 vacant posts and their course will start by January 2019.

3) Air Force Academy (AFA), Hyderabad

For Air Force Academy category exam, a candidate has to be of 20 to 24 years as on 1st January,
2019. Any graduation degree with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects at 10+2
level or Bachelor of Engineering degree is also needed. And, the person attempting exam for this
category have to be unmarried male, till 25 years.
There 32 pre-flying vacant posts at this academy and the course is scheduled in February, 2019.

4) Officers Training Academy (SSC Course for Men), Chennai

To appear for the Officers Training Academy category exam, one should be born not earlier than
January 2, 1993 and not later than January 1, 1999. Also, any graduation degree or equivalent in
any field from a recognized University is mandatory. The candidate can only be an unmarried

5) Officers Training Academy (SSC Women, Non-Technical Course), Chennai

For Officers Training Academy category, woman candidates should be born not earlier than
January 2, 1993 and not later than January 1, 1999.  They can be unmarried or widowed. With
regard to educational qualification, any graduation degree or equivalent in any area from a
recognized University will do just fine.
Now, this course has 2 vacant posts, and will start by April, 2019.
Those in their final year or semester of their graduation course can apply too. But, a proof of
having passed the degree course is needed before course actually commences. But, they can't
have any failed papers, at the time of application submission. Any other professional or technical
